World War 1

Online Resources

Here’s a list of some websites and organisations who have done excellent work on the topic of W.W.1. Where possible, I have used as many relevant Irish resources as possible! There are some excellent national and international resources available online! If you have found any other great resources please let me know and I will add them for others to use!

Irish Military War Museum

The IMWM is an incredible place to really bring the experience of W.W.1 alive for your students! You can take a walk through a full construction of a W.W.1 trench among other things!

National Museum of Ireland

The NMI runs a great guided tour for 5th and 6th class students that takes a look at the stories of Irish soldiers during W.W.1. The tour tells the stories of nurses, POWs and ordinary soldiers. The children also get hands on with W.W.1 uniforms and gas masks.

Cavan County Museum

The Cavan County Museum is home to the largest recreation of a W.W.1 trench in Ireland and the U.K. The trench is incredibly authentic, built using manuals from the era!

Imperial War Museum

The IWM in London has a wonderful range of online materials for both adults and children! There is a great 'Adventures in History' and 'Family Challenges' video series based on W.W.1!

The National WW1 Museum and Memorial

The National W.W.1 Museum in Kansas City has a good collection of online lesson resources and museum information.

BBC Bitesize History

The BBC website has a great collection of questions and answers on all sorts of different aspects of W.W.1 life. Great for research or for your own knowledge!
