In this lesson, we'll take a look the work of collage artist Jay Kelly. We will examine how collage art is made before we create our own map of Ireland made from collaged counties. At the end we will have a whole class art piece in the form of the map of Ireland.

Activity 1

County Collages
In this activity, the children will each be given an outline of a county of Ireland. They will have to research the county colours. Then they will search through materials and mixed media to find tones and shades of the colours they need.

Curriculum Objectives

The child should be enabled to:
1) explore and discover the possibilities of fabric and fibre as media for imaginative expression
2) look at, handle and talk about a variety of fabrics and fibres for experience of tactile, visual and spatial qualities
3) look at and talk about his/her work and the work of other children

Learning Objectives

-use the language of history including: chronology, timeline, causes, sources.


-sequence the events leading up to the start of WW1.


-identify some of the reasons why WW1 started.


-use online sources of information to research the flags of WW1 countries.



Learning Activities

-Video Stimulus: watch the video stimulus explaining the causes of WW1, pausing the video when prompted to answer stimulus questions.
-Comic Strip Sequencing: draw a three piece comic strip that explains the events of Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination.
-Summarising: using the video content, summarise three reasons why war was inevitable, even without Ferdinand's assassination.
-Flag Research: using ICT resources, research the flags of various countries that took part in WW1. Research carefully to make sure you are finding sources that show WW1 flags not modern flags.
